Mike & Vita invited us out to their precious house for their Engagement Session. We love when couples want to have us to their special places to create some special memories. This session was no different. Their cozy front porch is so charming. They then took us to hidden gem of a spot in their neighborhood to play in a tucked away creek. It’s a special day when you get to tell the story of one you love! Here is Amber’s brother’s wedding. It was a small backyard/home wedding. Only family at the ceremony and then a home reception with family and good friends. While all weddings are special there is just something about super small weddings that bring a level of intimacy that is never attained with bigger weddings. Hunny I love you. Our family now includes 2 kids and life can be hectic, but I wouldn’t change it. Most likely we will sit at home catching up on tv shows tonight or just go to bed early from exhaustion, but really that is ok with me. See here is the thing that I love most about us, we love doing life together no matter what that means. Yeah it rocks to get out once in

a while and have a hot date night with you, I’m not gonna lie! The other side is this, that I love just doing every day things with you by my side. I love that we own a business together and work together. I love that we can just sit on the couch and do absolutely nothing together. You my love make life so much more fun even when we do absolutely nothing! Thank you for being an amazing mother to our kids and an amazing wife to me!

Here are some pictures old and current just to remember some of the times we have spent together and as a family! Look forward to many more!

Do-It-Together-Project | Marriage Monday

If you’re a blog reader and haven’t found Young House Love yet then I really truly feel sorry for you.

(That’s them on the cover of a magazine. They’re famous, y’all.)

I am not a designer or home improvement-er by any stretch of the imagination, but this little couple has won my heart. A big reason for this is because they have clearly used their relationship to build something: a cool house, an amazing blog and a career doing something they love. And it all started because of a few do-it-together projects here and there.

So why not do the same in your own relationship?

A Do-It-Together Project

S (specific) – Look around. What needs to be taken care of that just seems to keep falling to the bottom of the to-do list? More than likely, you’re planning a wedding if you’re reading this, so what is a project that you can do TOGETHER that would help you guys feel closer and like you really are on a team?

M (measurable) – It’s pretty easy to measure goals like this. If you’re going to renovate the bathroom TOGETHER a good sign you’ve accomplished that goal is a toilet that works.

A (agreement) – Are you both down for this? State how your relationship would change if you felt more like a team. And please make sure that you are picking a do-it-TOGETHER project that both of you can get on board about. Also, don’t expect your husband to be paint color obsessed like the husband over at Young House Love, especially if he can’t tell the difference between pink and purple.

R (realistic) – Again, be realistic. Remember budgets, time, and that not everyone gets excited about the same things to the same degree. You might be all gung-ho about starting an herb garden and your hubby might be totally down for helping you get it set up, but don’t be disappointed when he isn’t all mushy about the fact that he’s eating Thyme that was grown by your loving hands.

T (time) – How long (realistically) will it take to reach your goal?

Alex & Melanie met with us & started telling us about their backyard wedding. We fell in love with the relaxed feeling they wanted it to have & knew we had to be apart of their special day together. They got married on Melanie’s parents back porch & the reception was held in the front yard. We love nothing more than being apart of such an intimate celebration when it takes place at a family home. Date Nights | Marriage Monday

Today’s Marriage Advice: Go on date nights.

You finally get married and people remind you to never stop dating. Sigh.

What makes it good advice:
What’s beautiful about marriage is that you’re building your family, the place where life happens and consistency exists. Unfortunately, the tradeoff is that all of that family-ness and consistency can leave you bored with your spouse, especially when you think back to the early days of your relationship filled with giddy excitement. Making date nights, particularly date nights that invite you to try out new experiences together, a priority is a great way to keep the love alive.

What makes it not so great advice:
There’s something boring about this advice that immediately limits our creativity on the potential of the date night. It can’t (and probably shouldn’t) be just a movie and dinner. Well, not every date night should be that. Use your date nights as a time to grow and push and get excited about life again. (The whole time I’m writing this I’m thinking about the Fey/Carell movie Date Night and I’m praying you guys don’t take my advice and end up in the middle of a drug bust or something)

John & Sarah | Cedarwood Engagement Session

We are so thrilled to be telling this amazing couple’s love story this year at Cedarwood! They love their wedding venue so much we just had to do their Engagement Session there. Who could resist Cedarwood’s Mooncake Lake & vintage row boat anyway? So we played on the amazing property, had them snuggle in the woods, & had a music filled picnic in the sunset with John & Sarah. During the picnic, John & Sarah treated us to a duet. You can see it here. These two are crazy talented! It was truly a blast & we can’t wait to tell their wedding day story!

Own Your Crap | Marriage Monday

The first session of premarital counseling I have the couple choose three areas of their relationship they consider strengths and three they consider weaknesses.

Every couple is different, but I saw a couple a few months ago that did something I had never seen before as we discussed the weaknesses in their relationship.

Her: I think financial management is a weakness for us. I feel so uncomfortable talking about money so I just avoid it all together. Probably not a good idea in the long run.

Him: Well, I put conflict resolution as a weakness. I get mad really easily and shut down. I know it’s hard on her when I do that during a fight.

So they’re a real couple with real problems (she won’t talk about money and he shuts down during arguments). They weren’t a super couple with no problems, but they did something very few couples do and that all healthy couples do:

They own the crap they bring into the relationship.

They had laid out concerns without blaming anyone. No blaming meant no defensiveness. No defensiveness meant that they could actually hear one another and the concerns that were on the table. Most importantly? The only person that can make the change recognized the need for the change. That fact alone knocks the legs out from under nearly any relationship weakness they might have.

Own your crap. It’s good for you.
